Recently, a new middle school student told me he hadn’t realized that (in the present tense) all -AR verbs had the same endings, all -ER verbs had the same endings, and all -IR verbs had their own endings. It was like a lightbulb went on when he understood what I was saying, showed him the charts, and worked through some examples.
As an instructor, there is nothing better than that moment your student gets it. It really feels good.
Here’s a quick review of present tense endings:
-AR
o, as, a amos, áis, an
-ER
o, es, e emos, éis, en
-IR
o, es, e, imos, ís, en
There are a lot of similarities and learning these as a pattern is helpful. I’m happy to explain it until it sinks in… just reach out!
